On September 16, 2017, Boreal Mountain Resort’s annual Community Day celebrated the solar installation with free and fun special programming open to the public, including the Red Bull Air Force Sky Divers, as well as discounted $10 access to the Woodward Bunker with $5 going to the USASA foundation.
In the 2017/2018 season, Boreal Mountain Resort and Woodward Tahoe launched the largest solar PV system in the California ski industry. In a partnership with Opterra, 715 photovoltaic panels will be installed on the roof of the Woodward Tahoe facility. This 235KW system will annually produce 325,000 KW of solar energy. This generation of power will exceed the annual demands of Woodward Tahoe operations, generates 65% of total base area power and 15% of total energy usage.
This initiative follows the 2015 Soda Springs Recycled Water Initiative in which our sister resort, Soda Springs, become the first resort in California to use 100% recycled water for snowmaking. This project was awarded the 2015 National Ski Areas Association Golden Eagle Award for environmental excellence.
The Tahoe Solar at Boreal Mountain Resort project is a hallmark in our commitment to how Boreal, Woodward Tahoe and Soda Springs seek to lead the ski industry and our communities in how we innovate, invest in, and prioritize our sustainability initiatives alongside the growth of our businesses.
